PRESS RELEASE: The Xwémalhkwu First Nation (HFN) is thrilled to announce the book launch for “Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories: A Graphic Novel”.
The official launch of a graphic novel based on sacred recordings of Elders will take place on November 22nd from 10am-12pm at the Homalco First Nation Hall (1218 Bute Cres Campbell River, B.C).
During the book launch, 100 copies will be given to the Nation to celebrate and honour this amazing accomplishment.
Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories is based on recordings of Homalco Elders from the early 90’s that were then produced into a mini podcast series by 100.7 FM the Raven. The three stories illustrated in the graphic novel depict accurate historic moments of Coast Salish history. Indigenous graphic artists who are featured include: Alina Pete, Valen Onstine and Gord Hill.

The Nation also wants to inform all media and those interested in purchasing a copy of the graphic novel that there will be a follow-up press release in the coming months after the Nation decides on the best form of distribution for the public to access it.
This project was managed by national award-winning Podcaster and Journalist Tchadas Leo from the HFN along with support from Elizabeth “Biz” Nijdam, a UBC Assistant Professor and Director of the UBC Comics Studies Cluster, and Education without Borders co-founders, Cecil and Ruth Hershler.
